Some experience of outdoor camping below minus 20 in winter

Camping in the ice and snow below minus 20 in winter, keeping warm needs to be taken seriously! As an outdoor participant in Xinjiang, I have basically seen snow and ice weather for twelve months of the year, often camping in low temperature conditions, and accumulated some experience. Now I will share with you!

Three-piece camping set
Tent, sleeping bag, moisture-proof pad. Known as three-piece camping sets, they play a decisive role in resisting the cold! Their indicators; parameters; performance, etc. are not introduced here, but only to talk about some aspects that play a role in keeping warm.

Tent
The key function of the tent is to prevent wind and rain! This is also the key equipment to prevent two of the three elements of low temperature, wet; cold; wind, wet and wind! The key to keeping warm during camping at extremely low temperatures in winter is to prevent the wind. Rain will turn into snow. Although there is no horrible sleet, today we mainly talk about camping when the low temperature does not rain. The key to windproof is the structure of the tent! Therefore, a tent with a tent pole bone structure must be more windproof than a tower tent.

Snow skirts and four-season inner accounts are also good performances for windproof and warmth. Therefore, when there is no snow skirt and there are only three seasons, you can use snow to fill the air gap between the bottom of the inner and outer tents. You can wrap the sleeping bag with a life-saving blanket and add a layer of wind without the four seasons. The most important function of the tent here is to prevent the inner dew from getting wet on the sleeping bag. Keep the tent properly ventilated to reduce internal dew. Don’t seal it too tightly. Small windows can be opened.

Sleeping bag
In Xinjiang hiking and camping, we require down water-repellent sleeping bags all year round, and we refuse to follow other non-down sleeping bags! I won’t say much about the reasons, let’s talk about a few experiences under extreme conditions. First of all, the amount of cashmere, if conditions permit, of course, the heavier the cashmere, the more the better! Below minus 20, we require that the down filling should not be less than 1,300 grams. For single billing, double billing can reach 1000 grams.

In addition, don’t believe too much about the cold resistance index marked on the sleeping bag. Secondly, I personally feel that taking off the outer jacket to keep warm clothes is warmer and more comfortable than putting on the outer jacket to keep warm clothes and drilling a sleeping bag. There is an experience here. The warm clothes and other clothes that are taken off are not for you to put up, but to put them in a sleeping bag, hold up the sleeping bag and wrap it around your body. You can pull the clothes over at any time where it feels cold.

Finally, the best way to feel warm in a sleeping bag is to boil more water and put more pulsating bottles as hot water bottles! To emphasize, it is not any beverage bottle. I have used four pulsation bottles with two bottles on the foot, one bottle on each foot, and one bottle on the front and back. It’s really warm and hot. You can burn a few more bottles if you feel cold! The water in the bottle can be used for breakfast tomorrow morning without fear of being frozen. Small experience, the bottle cap must be tightened in the pulsating bottle filled with boiled water. If the water leaks, the consequences will be serious. When you go to bed naked, wrap the bottle with socks or fleece, otherwise it will be very hot!

Moisture-proof pad
The function of the moisture-proof pad, the classification is not mentioned here. You can check it on Baidu. It is emphasized here that the moisture-proof pad is a must, the calorific value of the moisture-proof pad is very important, and the brand of the inflatable moisture-proof pad is very important. As the saying goes, three layers on the body are not as good as one layer under the body. The higher the calorific value, the better the thermal performance of the cushion, but the inflatable cushion is very dangerous to use in winter! Cold weather is more likely to cause the inflatable cushion material to degenerate and leak, and the consequences of a leaking inflatable cushion are very serious! Therefore, mountain climbing and camping will add a non-inflatable cushion after the inflatable cushion is double cushion mode.
The correct use of the camping three-piece set can basically solve the heating work of camping under low temperature.

Other methods of keeping warm, and precautions in low temperature.

Cooking in the tent, burning the fire, boiling water, and lighting the gas lamp. It will heat up the tent quickly and make yourself feel more comfortable. But the tent was burned out, flashed, water wetted the equipment, burned, and lack of oxygen. All are very serious accidents! Novices are strictly prohibited from performing the above operations in the tent!

Two people are much warmer than one in a tent. With a fleece liner, the body feels more comfortable. When it is really cold, two sleeping bags can be spliced together, whether it is an envelope or a mummified sleeping bag, huddling each other to keep warm, can save hypothermia. The warmth made of pulsating bottled hot water is the best way to keep warm. If one is not enough, there will be more than one, so camping should bring more pulsation!

Pay attention to low-temperature camping!

Water bags and kettles must be filled with water before going to bed, otherwise it will be difficult to take out the ice. Wet shoes are best to be baked dry, don’t put them outside, or you won’t be able to put them on if they freeze hard in the morning.

Finally, I need to explain. I emphasize that it is very unprofessional to use pulsating bottled hot water as a hot water bottle. But I didn’t say, I also emphasized that you can’t use ordinary beverage bottled water as a hot water bag! Because ordinary beverage bottled hot water will be deformed, the bottle cap will not close tightly. If water is spilled into the sleeping bag and the sleeping bag becomes wet, the consequences are very serious!

As for other methods, there are more professional equipment and tools to solve them, so I won’t explain them one by one here! I just hope you can know some methods, but you must be aware of its potential dangers during use!

This is just the way to keep warm when you camp and sleep. Walking, resting, bad weather, when you arrive at the camp, etc. all have their own different methods of keeping warm and warming up, and they cannot be generalized!
